this-belongs-to-the-past
This Belongs to the Past

This Belongs to the Past is a painting that emerges from a state of uncertainty, where form is not predefined but gradually revealed through the process. I do not begin a painting with a precise sketch. The presence of an internal impulse forms the starting point.

At the beginning, there is only a direction. A feeling, a tension, at times an indistinct internal movement that has not yet taken shape. I work within this state. Technically, it is a slow process. I apply layer upon layer onto the canvas. Each layer must dry and settle before the next can be added. But this is only the visible aspect. In parallel, another process unfolds, less visible but more decisive.

Each layer on the canvas corresponds to a layer within. I do not move forward until the previous one has fully emerged. This emergence is not always pleasant. There are moments when there is no clarity and no solution. Yet it is precisely through this accumulation of errors and corrections that something coherent begins to form.

At a certain point, I begin to see that the work is approaching completion. This is not rational knowledge, but a state of recognition, as if something that has long remained silent comes to the surface.

The final stage is always the most intense. It resembles a domino effect. One internal connection triggers the next, and the sequence begins to unfold almost autonomously. At a certain moment, I understand that nothing more needs to be added, not because the surface is filled, but because a certain degree of clarity has been reached.

The final layer of this painting marked a point of exit from my own illusions. The bright colours may appear naive and happy, yet beneath them lie dozens of layers of dark pessimism. For me, this is not about whether I could add more layers or more of my energy, but about my limits.

It is the moment in which uncertainty ceases to be perceived as a threat and transforms into clarity. I accept this state and no longer attempt to resolve it. At this point, I stop intervening and allow the work to exist independently of me.

Acrylic and oil on canvas
90 × 90 cm
2026
Original artwork, signed on the back
The canvas is stretched on a wooden frame
No external framing included
Worldwide shipping available upon request

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1243/8528/files/Sofia-Hallik-This-Belongs-to-The-Past-2026_64bb54d1-10ab-4a35-95dc-df31c03e2154.jpg?v=1775481891
